2013 Design Awards Winners

The 2013 winners were published in the Central Penn Business Journal on October 11th. The Business Journal distributes to over 10,000 business leaders in Central Pennsylvania. This is a great opportunity for the community to see the great impact Central PA Architects have on our community. All submissions are listed in the publication (not just the winners)!

Good Design is Good Business Award

Project: Courtyard Enclosure: Washington County Museum of Fine Art
Location: Hagerstown, MD
Architect: Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects
Client: Washington County Museum of Fine Art
General Contractor: Waynesboro Construction

Jury Comments:

— Brilliant design and programming move that gave new life to the institution.

— Without the extra space the courtyard creates, the buildings would be much more likely to become obsolete – and eventually be abandoned or need a major addition.

Honor Award

Project: St. James Episcopal Church Renovation & Addition

Jury Comments:

— Restrained scheme, beautifully detailed.

— Made a lovely building even better through very thoughtful and clever architectural moves that supported the evolving programs and culture of the church.

Merit Award

Project: Residences at Ribbon Place
Location: York, PA
Architect: Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects
Client: Berger Rental Communities
General Contractor: Pelger Engineering & Construction

Jury Comments:

— The day lit internal “street” was a very successful design decision; the jury could imagine being connected to the weather outside, and to the bones of the old building, when walking to the front doors of the units.

— The units were well considered and seemed to maximize the natural light.

— All in all – a wonderful redevelopment of the historic urban “fabric”.

Citation Award

Project: Workshop for a Machinist
Location: Lancaster County, PA

Jury Comments:

— The jury was most taken with the apparent simplicity and spatial character of the interior spaces of this project. The views and natural materials combined to create a serene and enticing project.

— The exterior massing and detailing was obviously important to the architectural team – but it was the interior spaces that won over the jury.

Project: Eastern Market Bench
Location: Lancaster, PA

Jury Comments:

— The jury liked the fact that this project had some underlying conceptual ideas that drove the design and development of this small, but impactful project.

— Additionally, the jury liked that it activates the space both during the day and night with its form that enhances social interaction, the overlay of poetry, and the illumination.

Project: 320 North George Street Office Renovation, LSC Design Corporate Headquarters
Location: York, PA
Architect: LSC Design, Inc.
Client: LSC Design, Inc.
General Contractor: Kinsley Construction, Inc.

Jury Comments:

— Another successful adaptive reuse of the historic urban “fabric” – which is so important to the character of these towns and cities in which these projects are located.

— Aligning the entry, the auditorium, and the open work spaces underneath the taller roof, and using the existing clerestory windows to bring natural light into the space were good design decisions that made the most of the existing building.

— Beautifully resolved design and presentation.

— The jury awarded a Citation Award because it is unbuilt ; and the jury looks forward to the project being completed , photographed and resubmitted for a built award.
