Hope to see you Saturday! \n________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________\nThe main focus of an urban sketchers chapter is for everyone to meet up in a city or town…go out…and…sketch! These gatherings are called “Sketch Crawls.” We would rotate through different regional cities and small towns\, at this point maybe once a month. These would typically be held on Saturdays or Sundays. We would meet on a designated day at a designated time at a designated place. Then everyone would scatter to sketch for about 2 hours\, say 11 AM-1 PM. \nWe would then gather at a local craft brewery\, grab drinks and snacks\, and have a “Throwdown.” The Throwdown is where everyone lays out their sketches side by side…everyone walks around and looks at all the sketches…hangs out and talks sketching. Then rinse…repeat…next month! \n A few very important items: \n\nYou do not need to be a polished trained artist to participate. I expect from beginners to veterans to participate. You just have to enjoy sketching!\nSketches do not need to be a finished drawing\, ready for framing. These are sketches! Some people may spend two hours on a single sketch. Others may do two or three sketches in the allotted time.\nYou can use ANYTHING to produce your sketches…watercolor\, pen and ink\, pencil\, pastel\, dip pens\, twigs and ink\, markers\, and on and on.\nThe Throwdowns and discussion and camaraderie at the end are TOTALLY NONJUDGEMENTAL…and fun! Any and all comments will be constructive. I have never been involved with a group more accepting and helpful and welcoming than urban sketchers. Registered Architects and Intern/Associate Architect members of the section are highly encouraged to submit their best built and unbuilt work for review by a jury of peer architects. Eligible members must be current members in good standing of the Central Pennsylvania section. Eligible work includes architecture\, interior architecture\, historic preservation\, adaptive reuse\, renovation\, and restoration projects as well as planning and urban design efforts. Built and unbuilt projects completed after January 2018 which have not previously received an award from the AIA Central Pennsylvania section are eligible. Awards may be given by the jury recognizing Honor\, Merit and Citation levels of achievement. \nWinners will be announced and all work celebrated at the Excellence in Design Awards event\, to be held on Thursday September 14\, 2023.  Event details are on our conference\, expo and design awards page.   \nThe cost per entry is $100. DESCRIPTION:2023 Conference\, Expo & Design Awards\nSeptember 14\, 2023\nExcelsior\, Lancaster\nAIA Central Pennsylvania members will be gathering in person on September 14th to celebrate design excellence\, this time in the city of Lancaster.   The day will offer three one hour architectural building tours\, locations still to be determined\, a vendor exhibition and happy hour\, followed by a keynote speaker\, and finally ending the night with the Excellence in Design Award reveal.  The 2023 conference location is Excelsior\, 125 King St.\, Lancaster\, PA  17602 \nSchedule of Events – Registration at Bottom of the page\nAfternoon Architectural Tours  (Updated Information!)\n\n\n\n2:00 to 3:00 PM: Tour #1: Steven Holl’s Winter Visual Arts Center at Franklin & Marshall College.\n\nParking in neighborhood- Park along Buchanan Avenue\nGPS route to 825 Buchanan Avenue to get to the correct location\nleading tour: Sheldon Wenger\, head of on-campus development projects \n\n\n3:00 to 3:20 PM: Drive from F&M to downtown. \n\nRecommend parking at East King Street Garage\, directly across street from Excelsior.\nParking will be at each attendee’s expense.\n\n\nGuests use restrooms in Excelsior prior to walking tour\n3:20 to 4:20: Tour #2: C. Meejin Yoon is the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of the College of Architecture\, Art\, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University and co-founding partner of Höweler + YoonOpens an external link. An architect\, designer\, and educator\, Yoon is committed to advancing creative and critical practices and pedagogies\, scholarship\, and research to address the many urgent environmental and social challenges we face in our cities and communities. \nYoon’s design research examines intersections between architecture\, urbanism\, technology\, and the public realm. Yoon’s body of work includes cultural and institutional buildings and public spaces such as the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia\, the Collier Memorial at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and the Moongate Bridge in the Shanghai Expo Park. Current professional projects include the Institute of Democracy at UVA\, the MIT Museum\, and the Living Village at the Yale Divinity School. \nYoon was appointed as the first female head of the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[1] In July 2018\, she was named the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of the College of Architecture\, Art and Planning at Cornell University.[2] In 2004\, Yoon founded Höweler+Yoon Architecture with partner Eric Höweler.  Notable works include White Noise White Light for the Athens 2004 Olympics; Double Horizon for the GSA at the San Ysidro Border Crossing; and the Sean Collier Memorial at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
